WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Vern Stephens robbed Bobby Brown of a base hit.
Phil Rizzuto had 5 hits and 2 RBI at Fenway Park as the New York Yankees
pulled off a dramatic comeback beating the Boston Red Sox by the count of 10
to 9.
New York scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning scoring 3 runs utilizing
4 base hits. After an out was recorded, Gene Woodling started the rally when
he ripped a base-knock. Bobby Brown was next and he laced a single. Johnny
Hopp then tripled bringing in two baserunners. Rizzuto came up and he
stroked a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. New York ended
up with 18 hits for the game while Boston had 11.
Tom Ferrick(11-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing 4
runs. Ferrick was helped out by Whitey Ford who recorded his 3rd save. Walt
Masterson(6-12) was given the loss in relief. He pitched 1/3 of an inning
allowing 4 hits and no walks.
Masterson was feeling apologetic in the locker room, 'I sure let that one get
away. What a miserable feeling to let the guys down; and our fans. One
minute things are looking great, then. BOOM, it's over with! I just hope I
get a chance to redeem myself real soon!'
