Ed Lopat went 9 strong innings as the New York Yankees defeated the

Philadelphia Athletes 5 to 0 at Shibe Park.

Lopat(13-5) had a strong outing. He surrendered only 4 hits and 2 walks in 9

innings. New York totaled 7 on the afternoon. Lou Brissie(10-10) suffered

the loss. He surrendered 5 runs and 4 hits in 5 innings.

It was a real barn-burner day in Shibe Park as New York Yankees finally pulled

ahead to stay, winning a very exciting game by a New York Yankees to 13

score.

The Philadelphia fans didn't appreciate the big day Jerry Coleman had. He

tripled in the 4th inning, depressed the partisan hometown fans with a grand

slam home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 5th inning and lined a single in

the 9th inning. New York bats were very productive in the 5th inning when

they had 4 runs on 3 hits and the 8th inning plating 4 runs. A wild and

woolly affair, this game saw the lead change 5 times.

Tom Ferrick(8-2) allowed 3 runs in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Joe

Page recorded his 9th save. Joe Coleman(0-3) was given the loss in relief.

He allowed 1 hit and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

Elmer Valo had 4 hits and 5 RBI for Philadelphia but his effort was wasted in

the loss.

9,325 fans watched an exciting game at Griffith Stadium. The Washington

Senators put 6 runs on the scoreboard in the 8th inning and topped the New

York Yankees by the slimmest of margins, 6 to 5.

New York lost it in the 8th inning when Washington did all their damage when

they tallied 6 runs on 5 hits. The key at-bat was by Sam Mele who came

through for the home fans when he laced a base-knock which was good for two

runs. New York had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came up short.

Mickey Harris(5-5) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 3 innings.

Harris was helped out by Sandy Consuegra who recorded his 6th save. Joe

Ostrowski(5-2) suffered the loss in relief.

'We just made a lot of mistakes, mostly mental,' Casey Stengel said. 'It's

bad enough when the other team beats you, but when you start beating

yourselves, that's really bad.'

Brown gets big hit in 12th as Yankees win sloppy in Washington ,8-6

Billy Johnson had 4 hits and 6 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the New York Yankees

embarrassed the league door-mat Philadelphia Athletes by the lopsided score

of 17 to 3.

Johnson was a one-man wrecking crew. He lined a base-hit plating two runs in

the 2nd inning, slapped a single plating two runs in the 3rd inning, tripled

which was good for two runs in the 6th inning and delivered a one-base hit in

the 8th inning. New York kept the scorekeepers busy in the 2nd inning when

they had 5 runs on 5 hits and the 6th inning which saw them plate 8 runs on 5

hits. New York out-hit Philadelphia for the game, 15 hits to 6.

The win went to Tommy Byrne(12-5) who allowed 3 runs in 8 and 1/3 innings. Bob
