After blowing Game 1 ,Yankees beat Washington 4-3 and clinch tie for AL Pennant

The Scooter's 2 run double in the 7th ,broke a 2-2 tie.Rizzuto's been steady all year ,and leads the league in runs scored with 128,while playing great defensive ball. The Bombers need 1 more win ,or Indian loss to win the Flag(which should have been won today, except for the meltdown in Game 1-blowing a 7-2 lead in the 8th inning).

the Boston Red Sox beat the New York Yankees by the count of 7 to 3.

Dropo was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided

much of the offense for the visitors. He cracked a two-run shot in the 1st

inning, delivered a solo blast (his 35th of the season) in the 3rd inning,

banged out a single in the 7th inning and delivered a one-base hit in the 9th

inning. Although they lost, New York did out-hit Boston 11 to 8.

Joe Dobson(16-8) allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the

victory. The losing pitcher was Tommy Byrne(15-7). He allowed 3 homeruns in

3 innings of work.

Profile of steady Yankee outfielder Gene Woodling

Eugene Richard (Gene) Woodling (August 16, 1922 - June 2, 2001) was a Major League Baseball outfielder (mostly left field) for the Cleveland Indians (1943, 1946), Pittsburgh Pirates (1947), New York Yankees (1949-1954), Baltimore Orioles (1955, 1958-1960), Cleveland Indians (1955-1957), Washington Senators (1961-1962), and the New York Mets in their expansion year of 1962. He batted left-handed, threw right-handed, and was born in Akron, Ohio.
Before coming to the majors, Woodling was a four-time Minor League batting champion. He mostly played left field when he entered the majors after his time in the U.S. Navy, but spent much time in right field and also played 93 games in center.
Woodling played with many teams on his career, but gained more loyalty with the Yankees for six years, than at any point before or after. With them, Woodling had what was probably his best year, 1953. Although he only had 395 at bats, he led the American League with a .429 on-base percentage. While Woodling was with the Yankees, the team won five consecutive World Series (1949-1953). During that time, Yankee manager Casey Stengel praised the outfielder's ability to run and throw. Stengel generally platooned him with right-hander Hank Bauer, but each averaged 400 at bats a season. Woodling hit a solo home run in each World Series from 1951 through 1953, and In 1951, he helped Allie Reynolds secure his first of two no hitters on the season, when he homered in a 1-0 win over Bob Feller and the Indians. Woodling gained he distinction in 1952 of becoming the first player to hit a "pinch-hit" triple in the World Series Game 1).[citation needed]
On November 17, 1954, an amazing record 17-player deal took place between the Orioles and Yankees, involving Woodling. Besides Woodling, the Yankees didn't give up much talent, with the best of the lot being Gus Triandos and Hal Smith. However, the Orioles gave away future 20-game winner Bob Turley and Don Larsen, who would go on to pitch a perfect game in the 1956 World Series for New York. Woodling had been sidelined for the last part of the 1954 season with a broken arm.[citation needed]
Soon, Woodling moved to the Indians where he set career-highs in home runs (19), runs batted in (78), and batting (.321) in 1957. A few months before he turned 40, he was sent to the New York Mets where old Yankees manager Casey Stengel was working on his latest project, the newborn Mets. Woodling would be managed by Stengel for the remainder of the 1962 season. He was released before the 1963 season, after publicly criticizing the Met front office's contract negotiations with Marv Throneberry.[citation needed]
In a 17-season career, Woodling batted a solid .284 with 147 home runs and 830 RBI in 1796 games. Woodling ended with a .386 on-base percentage. He had 1585 career hits in 5587 at bats.
Woodling died in Barberton, Ohio. His biggest contribution to baseball may have come off the field. He worked to help bring a pension fund for major league players.
"He was just such a great guy," said former Yankees manager Ralph Houk in an article in the New York Daily News

WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Joe Collins robbed Don Lenhardt of an extra base hit.

John Mize ripped 2 homeruns as the impressive New York Yankees crushed the

hapless St. Louis Browns 16 to 3.

Mize was unconscious out there. While St. Louis pitching was serving

softballs up there for him to hit, the St. Louis fans were serving up some

hardball barbs when he entered the batter's box. But he just used it as fuel

for the fire. He belted a three-run homer in the 1st inning and cleared the

bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 41st of the season) in the 5th inning.

New York lit up the scoreboard in the 1st inning with 4 runs on 5 hits and

the 5th inning with 4 runs on 4 hits. The New York offense was great,

scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.

The victory was credited to Tommy Byrne(15-6) who went 7 innings, allowing 3

runs. Dick Starr(4-11) was hit with the loss. He allowed a few too many

baserunners giving up 9 hits and 2 walks in 2 and 1/3 innings.

doubled scoring two baserunners in the 3rd inning and cleared the fences for

a two-run home run (his 29th of the season) in the 4th inning. New York

provided plenty of action in the 3rd inning with 5 runs on 5 hits. For the

game New York out-hit St. Louis 21 to 15.

Ed Lopat(16-6) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 4 runs for the win. Cliff

Catcher Yogi Berra had 2 base hits as the potent New York Yankees outscored

the Detroit Tigers 3 to 0.

New York went ahead for good in the 2nd inning plating an isolated run. That

scoring would be all that was needed. New York managed only 6 on the

afternoon.

The winning pitcher was Allie Reynolds(16-7) who allowed no runs in 7 innings.

Joe Page was credited with his 11th save. The loss was charged to Art

Houtteman(15-12). He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned

run in his 7 innings of work.

With this win, New York has a league leading 98-42 record. They have been 5-5

lately. Detroit will hope that this loss is only a 'blip' on their recent

8-2 run - and not a start of a new trend.

Trout(8-6) was indeed brilliant as he hand-cuffed the New York offense. He

was stingy on the mound, allowing just 2 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings. New

York could do no damage in the 9th.

Joe Ostrowski(6-3) suffered the loss. He gave up 1 run and 7 hits in 8

In a good matchup it was the Detroit Tigers 8, the New York Yankees 6 at

Briggs Stadium.

Hal Newhouser(10-9) got the win despite looking shaky at times. He gave up 4

runs, 7 hits and no walks in 5 innings. New York had a chance to come back

in the 9th but they came up short.

Vic Raschi(13-12) was given the loss. 'You have to give New York credit, they

fought us tough to the end' Red Rolfe said. 'It could have gone either way,

but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
