Shortstop Phil Rizzuto(pictured at left) had 4 hits and 5 RBI as the New York Yankees defeatedthe Detroit Tigers by a score of 16 to 8 at Briggs Stadium. Rizzuto was a one-man wrecking crew. He ripped a base-knock knocking in a runin the 2nd inning, tripled which plated a run in the 7th inning, lofted athree-run bomb (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning and stroked a singlein the 9th inning. New York bats were very productive in the 7th inningwhich saw them plate 10 runs on 8 hits. New York had 19 hits for theafternoon while Detroit had 12. Joe Page(1-3) went 1 and 1/3 innings allowing no runs for the win. Page washelped out by Joe Ostrowski who recorded his 3rd save. Paul Calvert(1-4)took the loss in relief.
