Tommy Byrne was able to finish what he started and was credited with a

complete game at Yankee Stadium where the blistering-hot New York Yankees

beat the Philadelphia Athletes 9 to 2.

Philadelphia was unable to recover after New York went ahead in the bottom of

the 5th inning with 3 runs on 5 hits. Gene Woodling led off and started the

rally when he tripled. Billy Johnson was next and he hit a deep fly

resulting in a run. Byrne then lined a single. Phil Rizzuto followed and he

tripled bringing in another run. Jerry Coleman stepped into the box and

delivered a one-base hit scoring the final run of the inning. New York

banged out 16 on the afternoon.

Byrne(10-2), allowing 2 runs for the game, picked up the victory. Bobby

Shantz(1-8) was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings giving up 13 hits

and 1 walk.
