Lopat's shutout in second game,salvages split with Chicago

30,750 fans were treated to a fine game at Yankee Stadium as only one run

separated the combatants at game's end. The Chicago White Sox won by the

slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.



Billy Pierce(3-8) gave a fine effort for Chicago. He was reached for 9 hits

and 4 walks in 7 innings. Although they lost, New York did out-hit Chicago

10 to 7.



Bob Cain recorded his 2nd save. Allie Reynolds(8-4) suffered the loss. He

surrendered 4 runs and 7 hits in 8 innings.

Hank Bauer had 3 base hits and Ed Lopat delivered 9 solid innings at Yankee

Stadium as the indomitable New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox by the

count of 3 to 0.



Lopat(8-4) came through with a virtuoso performance against the Chicago

hitters. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 walks in 9 innings lowering his ERA

from 3.73 to 3.47. New York rapped out 11 hits for the afternoon.



Bill Wight(4-5) absorbed the loss. The New York ballclub's record now stands

at a league leading 58-23. With the loss Chicago now has a record of 33-51.
