Cliff Mapes had 2 base hits and 3 RBI at Yankee Stadium as the New York
Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 5 to 3.
In the 2nd inning New York scored 3 runs with the help of 3 hits. The key
offensive moment was provided by Mapes who brought the crowd to their feet
when he tripled scoring two baserunners. Chicago had a chance to come back
in the 9th but they came up short.
Tommy Byrne(13-5) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Joe
Ostrowski recorded the save, his 4th. Bill Wight(7-9) was the losing
pitcher. He was hit hard and gave up 9 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings.
'I had a little blister on my index finger before the game, but I thought it
was nothing.' Byrne said. 'I was lucky I got a win because I couldn't put
the ball where I wanted it.'
