WEB GEMS- Top 2nd: Whitey Ford robbed Mickey Grasso of a base hit.
Top 6th: Phil Rizzuto robbed Fred Taylor of a base hit.
Whitey Ford allowed just 2 hits at Yankee Stadium as the indomitable New York
Yankees came back dramatically to top the Washington Senators by the score of
2 to 1.
New York came up with the deciding runs in the bottom of the 9th inning
scoring 2 runs using 3 hits. Jerry Coleman led off and he delivered a
base-hit. Yogi Berra stepped into the batter's box and he hit a single. Joe
Dimaggio then drew a walk to load the bases. Hank Bauer struck out, unable
to help the rally. Cliff Mapes stepped into the box and laced a base-knock
making New York the victor and beginning a joyous home town celebration. New
York managed only 5 on the afternoon.
Ford(12-1), allowing 1 run for the game, picked up the victory. Bob
Kuzava(8-10) absorbed the loss. He allowed just 2 runs and 4 hits in 8
innings.
Ford and Berra were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory. As Casey Stengel noted, 'A win like this one can
do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
