Joe Dimaggio launched 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the incredible New York
Yankees rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Philadelphia
Athletes, 9 to 8.
New York put a big number on the board in the 9th inning, which proved too
much for Philadelphia to overcome as they ripped Philadelphia for 7 runs on 7
hits. The key at-bat was by Dimaggio who brought the crowd to their feet
when he lofted a three-run bomb (his 24th of the season). New York had 13
hits overall, while Philadelphia had 9.
The win went to Fred Sanford(8-1) who allowed 4 runs in 2 innings. Dick
Fowler(1-5) was the loser in relief. He was unable to retire a batter giving
up 4 hits and 1 walk.
Casey Stengel was in great spirits in his post-game interview. Yet, when
asked about his feelings after the thrilling comeback victory, he
volunteered, 'I'll tell you this much - I know how my counterpart, Connie
Mack, feels right now - and it's not very good. It's terrible when you come
up on the short end of one of these!'
