The very potent New York Yankees came roaring back in the top of the ninth to
spoil the anticipated celebration of the hometown fans. The final score,,
was 6 to 5.
New York came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning scoring 5
runners on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Cliff Mapes who quieted the crowd
when he banged out a single which was good for two runs. Despite losing,
Chicago out-hit New York 10 to 5.
Tom Ferrick(7-2) was the winner allowing 1 run in 1 inning. Joe Page earned
his 7th save. Ray Scarborough(5-12) suffered the loss in relief. He was
unable to retire a batter giving up 2 hits and 3 walks.
'I pin this one on my own shoulders,' Scarborough said. 'The bottom line is I
didn't get the job done. Our fans deserve better than this.'
