Ed Lopat allowed Casey Stengel to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game as
the incredible New York Yankees defeated the slumping Detroit Tigers 3 to 2
at Yankee Stadium.
New York tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning when they had 3 base
hits. Bobby Brown led off and he laced a one-base hit. Lopat stepped up
next and he laid down a sacrifice bunt. Phil Rizzuto then doubled scoring a
run. Jerry Coleman stepped in and he slapped a base-hit scoring the final
run of the inning. Detroit had a chance to come back in the 9th but they
came up short.
The winning pitcher was Lopat(9-4) who allowed 2 runs for the game. Art
Houtteman(10-8) absorbed the loss. Casey Stengel was in a talkative mood in
the clubhouse, 'Great game! If only we could win all of the close ones -
wouldn't that be nice! Since that's not going to happen, I think I'll savor
this one for a little while.'
