WEB GEMS- Bot 6th: Phil Rizzuto robbed Sam Mele of a base hit.

Ed Lopat allowed Casey Stengel to rest his bullpen, tossing a complete game

and second baseman Jerry Coleman had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the New York

Yankees topped the Washington Senators by a score of 12 to 5 at Griffith

Stadium.

Washington never recovered after New York took the lead in the 3rd inning with

2 runs using 3 hits. Phil Rizzuto opened up the inning nicely when he banged

out a single. After an out was recorded, Yogi Berra stepped in and he

delivered a single. Joe Dimaggio then tripled knocking home two runners.

New York had 14 hits for the night.

The win went to Lopat(12-5) who allowed 5 runs in the game. Sandy

Consuegra(4-9) absorbed the loss. By surrending 10 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings

his ERA jumped from 5.71 to 6.43.
