47,682 fans watched an exciting game at Yankee Stadium. The New York Yankees

topped the Chicago White Sox by the slimmest of margins, 5 to 4.



Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. New York won the

hard fought contest in the 11th inning. Cliff Mapes opened up the inning

nicely when he drew a walk. Two outs later Phil Rizzuto came up and he

lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 4th of the season)

resulting in an exciting win for New York and a raucous post-game celebration

by the home town fans. New York finished with 8 hits in the victory.



Joe Ostrowski(4-0) allowed 1 run in 2 innings, and picked up the victory. Ken

Holcombe(4-10) was hit with the loss in relief. The New York ballclub's

record now stands at a league leading 59-23. With the loss Chicago now has a

record of 33-52.
